The Plan

A good while ago I made myself a weathervane, based on the idea of a swimming ammonite.

However over the years it became a little sad. Although mostly made of oak the central boss was a softwood fish and this had rotted. Time I think for a refresh:)

The process

The ammonite, the mobile part was oak and only needed a sand and paint. The central boss as mentioned required renewing so I went with the idea of an Ichthyosaur thus matching the ammonite theme. The fastening base again oak just required a refresh. Framework was dowling and this needed replacing. I just happened to have some metal tubing of the required size so repair done!

When it came to painting I attempted to explore the possibilities using mica powder to give the translucent multi-coloured effect of fish scales. I think this worked out ok with a polyurethane yacht varnish as base. Anyway the detail image will give the general idea.

And on to the workshop
